Traditional Thai massage in Frankfurt: origins, technique & tips
Nuad Thai – an ancient art of massage
In Thailand, traditional Thai massage is called “Nuad Thai” or “Nuad Phaen Boran”. According to tradition its roots go back some 2,500 years; the physician Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a contemporary of the Buddha, is regarded as its founder. At the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok the energy lines are still recorded on stone tablets from the 19th century. Since December 2019, Nuad Thai has been on the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The ten energy lines (Sen Sib)
In Thai teaching, energy lines – the “Sen” – run through the whole body; ten of them are considered the main lines, the “Sen Sib”. Your therapist works along these lines with thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows and knees. The pressure is calm and rhythmic, with passive stretches in between. That is why Thai massage is often described as “passive yoga”: you lie relaxed while your body is moved.
Thai massage or oil massage – which suits me?
Traditional Thai massage is the more active of the two: no oil, comfortable clothing, pressure and stretching. If you prefer something gentle, warm and flowing, the aroma oil massage is a good choice; if you love warmth, try the hot stone massage. Short on time? A back massage from 45 minutes works well.
What does the massage feel like?
The pressure is built up slowly, held for a moment and released again – a calm rhythm your body gradually follows. For the stretches, your therapist gently guides arms, legs and back into position; you do not have to do anything yourself. Some spots feel intense at first, and afterwards many guests describe a sense of space and lightness. One word is enough and the pressure is adjusted.
Wellness, not therapy
At Erawan the massage is a wellness treatment: it is about relaxation and well-being and does not replace medical treatment or physiotherapy. Please tell us before your appointment if you are pregnant, have recently had surgery or have complaints affecting your spine or joints. We will then work out together what suits you – if in doubt, ask your doctor first.
Tips for your first Thai massage
Eat only lightly beforehand and arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in. Tell us in advance where you feel tension and how much pressure you like – “firm” means something different to everyone. After the massage it feels good to drink plenty of water and take the rest of the day slowly.
